It is located in the scenic, hilly woodlands of the Sans Bois Mountainsof southeast Oklahoma.
Lookout point on the top of the caves.
Robbers Cave is historically notable as a former hideout for infamous outlaws Belle Starrand Jesse James.
If you look closely you can see an X on the ground, on the right side. I wonder if this is a marker of some sort. I really didn't notice this when I was actually there.
After the Civil War, this area became legendary for sheltering fugitives from the law. Some of these included Jesse Jamesand Belle Starr. Other fugitives included the Dalton Gang, the Younger'sand the Rufus Buck Gang. (source wikipedia)
These caves are perfect spots to hide out at. I found myself getting a little lost the further in I went.
What a nice place to sit and ponder about all the outlaws that came through here and looked up at the sun, in this same spot.
Steep over looks, on top of the caves.
What a bird's eye view.. I can see why they hid out here.
This is the dam at Robber's Cave. The park encompasses three lakes: Lake Carlton, Lake Wayne Wallace and Coon Creek Lake. These were created by dams built on Fourche Maline Creek, a tributary of Poteau River.
You can explore all the caves that the outlaws explored years ago.
I wonder how many outlaws sit on this same rock...
Thanks for reading about Robber's Cave. It has become one of my favorite places to visit in SE Oklahoma.
